Carrying on from the session yesterday the noise tests continued, but a change of wind direction meant that readings were higher than previously, Lee Harpham, the quietest from day 1 was 2 dB louder with the same set-up.
Redspeed, Barker Racing and Karting Paradise along with some individual drivers worked hard again to help reduce the noise, all trying different combinations of materials to help kill the sound. The addition of the VM engine to the tests means that all style of engines can meet the acceptable levels.
As the session finished nearly all drivers reached the accepted level of 93.5 dB.
The final session planned had to be abandoned due to the extreme wet weather conditions, as this would affect the readings and would also have been too dangerous on a circuit with minimal marshall coverage.

The International Superkart Series are working closely with Circuit Park Zandvoort to lower the noise produced by the circuit. In a series of tests, the top teams from the ISS will make changes to their superkarts to help achieve this, all will be monitored by the circuit officials.
The teams arrive at Zandvoort from Assen, so the initial tests are run on those settings to set a noise level. Then they started to try the changes to see if they can reduce the decibels. From the 97 to 100db starting point, the teams made changes to the silencing of the exhaust systems, added foam to inside the fiberglass bodywork, baffles/ muffles to the induction system and so on. The larger silencers on the exhaust was a huge improvement, and reduced the noise levels down to 94 to 95db, but some of the foam/ muffling added to the induction actually added noise and actually removing the air filters actually improved the levels.
So by the end of the first day the best level achieved was from Barker Racing’s Lee Harpham at 92.4db, from using an larger aluminum silencer and removing vibration from the bodywork.
Circuit Park Zandvoort are very impressed by the improvements and are happy that a series is willing to work with them to help them reach their required noise levels, rather than stop racing there.
On thursday there will sound test from 09.00 till 13.00 hours and 17.00 till 19.00 hours
Report by Rob Chilcott #84
CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship, Round 2, Assen (NLD), 6-8/08/2010
Bennett dominates but Payart still in Championship contention
UK’s Gavin Bennett (Anderson-DEA) dominated this event from start to
finish. He was fastest in both qualifying practice sessions and his time of
1’37’’3 (168.5 km/h) in the 2nd session was the quickest Superkart
lap all weekend. So he would start both races from pole-position.
In Race 1 he was away stunningly quickly ahead of fellow front row starter Rob
Chilcott (Anderson-FPE), and 2005 Champion John Riley (Anderson-FPE) soon passed
Chilcott for 2nd place. 3-4 laps into the race, Riley closed to
within 0.5 of a second of Bennett and looked to be ready to mount a challenge.
But Bennett pulled away strongly and from that point his only challenge was to
negotiate the backmarkers he would lap in the later stages of the race. His
winning margin was 6 seconds.
Yet, impressive as this was, the drive by Frenchman Damien Payart (PVP-FPE) was perhaps as good. The former double Champion (2003/4) steadily made his way forward from his lowly 7th row 15th place starting position and into the Top 10. He had a great battle with the 2008 Champion, Germany’s Peter Elkmann (MS Kart-VM), to claim 4th, then forced an error out of Chilcott for 3rd before finally taking Riley’s 2nd place later on. “I didn’t know where I had finished”, he said. “I didn’t know how many were in front of me, and there were many lapped Drivers. I am very satisfied with 2nd place in all the circumstances. We had the set up wrong in qualifying practice but I knew the engine was fast, and so it proved.”
Riley just held off Chilcott for the final podium place. Elkmann was worth his 5th place and Carl Hulme (GBR - Anderson-FPE) drove from row 7 to a good 6th place. Germans Daniel Hentschel (Anderson-DEA) and Guido Kleinmeyer (Anderson-BRC) were 7th and 8th in front of the Dutchman Marcel Maasmann (MS Kart-VM) with Englishman Paul Kennings (Anderson-FPE) completing the Top 10. The only lady in the race, Priscilla Speelman of Holland (MS Kart-VM), drove well to finish in the Top 20 but the only non-European, Andy Kiker from the USA (Anderson-DEA), went out on the 4th lap. The biggest disappointment was Northern Ireland’s Trevor Roberts (Anderson-BRC). The winner of round 2 at Silverstone had his clutch fall off at the start.
In Race 2 there was a much more even break with Riley and Chilcott side by side with Bennett, Riley even getting his nose in front. But half way round the opening lap Bennett had established an advantage which he built on throughout the race. Indeed his winning margin this time was a massive 9 seconds.
Once again there was good racing behind him with Payart repeating his Race 1 effort to go from the 8th row to 2nd place. This time he had a tougher task to get past Adam Kout (MS Kart-VM), Elkmann and Lehtinen who were having a great race in 5th, 6th and 7th place. But the Frenchman was equal to the task and richly deserved his 2nd runner-up spot of the day. That points tally is sufficient for him to take a lead into the final event in his native France.
Roberts showed what might have been with a terrific drive into 3rd place exemplified by his battle with Chilcott which saw them trade places three times. Chilcott can count himself unlucky to have missed the podium by a fraction of a second for the second time. Germans Elkmann and Hentschel were solid if not threatening to challenge for the podium and Hulme once again drove into the Top 10 from downfield. Priscilla Speelman again made the Top 20 and American Andy Kiker found himself in the Top 20 just after the mid-race distance.
“The circuit was greasy early on”, said Bennett, “so I took it steady. I felt the kart went really well and I have been in good form coming into this event, especially my victory in the British GP last month. I tried to overtake the backmarkers on the straights and with my advantage I was able to back off if I needed to. I love Assen, and obviously I have loved this perfect weekend.”
Roberts was philosophical in 3rd place. “Obviously I was disappointed this morning, but in all honesty I am not on the pace of these two (Bennett and Payart). I take my hat off to both of them.”
What would have happened if Payart had qualified at the front? We shall never know but he gave us a great race coming through the field and clearly these two Champions will be at the forefront of the battle for the 2010 Championship title.
All this took place in front of an official attendance of 58,000 packing the home straight grandstands on the traditional Rizla Racing Day.
So Damien Payart takes a narrow 6 points lead into the final round at Le Mans on 22-24 October.

OPENING
SUBJECT TO WEATHER CONDITIONS

Damien Payart (PVP-FPE) threw down the challenge to the other European Superkart racers, and especially the well fancied British Drivers, when he took the 2010 Championship lead after the opening two rounds at Silverstone.
Race 1 was strange because the great majority of Drivers chose slick tyres for the drying conditions. Yet the first eight Drivers to finish were amongst the few that had chosen wet tyres. Malcolm Crowe (Anderson-DEA) from pole position was one of the first Drivers to realise he had made the wrong tyre choice and elected to come in and change but spun out of the race before he could do so. But the other front row starter Trevor Roberts (Anderson-BRC) made a superb start and led the race until just before half race distance when his engine seized. The impressive Norwegian Erik Martin Gjertsen (PVP-PVP) took over the lead for three laps and looked the likely winner. But Damien Payart starting on the 7th row was making steady progress through the field and in the final quarter of the race, pulled away for a 4.8 seconds winning margin. Swedish newcomer to the Championship, Tony Ahlgren (PVP-PVP) was impressive throughout and was well worth the 3rd podium place.
“I took it easy in the opening laps and tried to avoid those Drivers on slicks”, Payart explained. “But once I got ahead I had no problems and I had made just the right tyre pressure choice for my Bridgestone wets”, he said.
Race 2 was altogether different with the track completely dry. Pole sitter Malcolm Crowe made that advantage count and set a fast opening pace. But Trevor Roberts again took the lead and this time there was to be no bad luck story. However, at two thirds race distance defending champion Gavin Bennett (Anderson-DEA) was closing fast and looked to have enough speed to go by. But the Irishman Roberts resisted his moves and went on to win by just over a second. Malcolm Crowe had no misfortunes this time and the Channel Islander made the podium in 3rd place.
“I am obviously pleased to win”, said Roberts. “But I knew Gavin was closing in on me. I could hear him changing gears and I knew what a fast finisher he is”. Then he added bitterly “I hope I can find the budget to complete the Championship”. Bennett also had an eye on the Championship as a whole. “I think I have just salvaged my title hopes with that result” he said with a smile.
The morning and afternoon races had been in stark contrast. Four PVP chassis finished in the first four places in Race 1 with three Frenchmen in the Top 6 and only one Englishman in the Top 10. In Race 2 it was Anderson chassis in the first four places with five English Drivers and two Frenchmen in the Top 10.
Damien Payart had mastered the Silverstone Formula One Grand Prix circuit in all conditions (wet, dry and drying) with a first and a fifth places, and one of the best Englishmen was the least experienced: the consistent Lee Morgan (Raider-Rotax) who is 20 years old, took a fifth and a seventh places and looks a potential champion of the future.

THE GREAT RETURN OF SUPERKARTS AT SILVERSTONE
Mecca of Superkart (then called "Formula E") in the 1980’s with the British Superkart Grand Prix, the Silverstone circuit will again vibrate to the humming of the fastest karts in the world.
On 3 and 4 April, the circuit of the British Formula One GP will be the framework of the first round of the 2010 edition of the CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship. Stimulated by the pleasure of taking up competition again after a long winter and by the opportunity to race on the 5.1 kilometres course, the 50 entered Drivers are prepared to face the difficulties of the famous Copse, Becketts or Stowe corners. Further to this British stage, they will continue their European tour on equally prestigious circuits: Assen (Netherlands, on August 8) and Le Mans (France, on October 24).
Winner of the 2009 edition of the European Championship, UK’s Gavin Bennett (Anderson-DEA) is throwing in his title; he will again count among his main opponents his two runner-ups of last year, i.e. the Frenchman Damien Payart (PVP-FPE) and the German Peter Elkmann (MS Kart-VM). The latter, Champion in 2008, will use for the first time a Czech engine of the VM make in England as a replacement of his usual Yamaha. The interests of the Czech engine will also be defended by the Swede Stefan Malm, the Dutchman Marcel Maasmann and two new-comers in the Superkart world, Holland’s Kievitsbosch, a very talented former KZ Driver, and the Czech Adam Kout, whose joint experience of the KZ category and of Formula Renault could prove to pay off. The FPE engine, mainly represented by its Driver-Manufacturer Damien Payart, will again be used by Britain’s Carl Hulme, John Riley and Rob Chilcott. Although it is the most recent of all entered engines, the DEA "made in Italy" will obviously be chiefly represented by the reigning Champion, but it will also have two new ambassadors, namely the Brit Malcolm Crowe and France’s Benjamin Mahé. The Northern Irishman Trevor Roberts and the German Guido Kleinemeyer remain faithful to the Canadian make BRC, while the PVP delegation will be led by the Frenchman Emmanuel Vinualès, the Swede Tony Ahlgren, the Norwegian Erik M. Gjertsen and obviously the Dane Poul Petersen, father of PVP chassis and engines. The field will also comprise a few karts powered by the good old Rotax 256, the Yamaha V2 and single-cylinder Honda engines.
In total, out of the 50 entries, there will 11 nationalities at the start, the host country being the most represented, with no fewer than 21 competitors.
Two qualifying practice sessions are scheduled for Saturday 4 April, and the two 50-km long races will be held on Sunday 5 April, at 12h00 and 16h10. The results will be published in real time on www.cikfia.com. This first event of the CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship will be organised within the framework of the first round of the "Superleague Formula" (a Series for single-seaters with 750 HP V12 engines, bearing the colours of great football teams).

Noise tests at Zandvoort 10-8-2009.
On the Monday after the RIZLA EK weekend at Assen, noise tests
were conducted at Zandvoort with REDSPEED (John Riley, Robert
Chilcott, Dave Harvey), BARKER RACING (Graham Barker, Gary
Parkes, Lee Harpham) and MS KART HOLLAND (Priscilla Speelman,
Mark Nachtegeller).
The results are better than previous tests completed earlier in
the year, but not yet sufficient.
The difference
is small and Russell Anderson (present as a consultant at the tests) believes
this can be bridged without performance loss.
Our organisation is considering changes to the rules of procedure for events
held at the Circuit Park Zandvoort, made with agreement from the circuit
owners, to be able organise a race in 2010.
Furthermore, we are looking at the options to carry out further noise tests at the circuit.

UK's Gavin Bennett, 2009 CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship leader before the last round at Assen (NL)
THE 2007 AND 2008 CHAMPIONS FACE TO FACE
The most popular Superkart event of the season, the “Rizla Racing Day” held at Assen (Netherlands), will crown the 2009 CIK-FIA European Superkart Champion on Sunday 9 August 2009. Even though ten drivers still have a mathematical chance of landing the title, it seems very likely that the champion’s crown will be won either by the Briton Gavin Bennett (Anderson-DEA), champion in 2007, or by the title-holder, Germany’s Peter Elkmann (MS Kart-Yamaha). The more confident of the two protagonists before this third and final championship event is undoubtedly Bennett. With three wins in four races under his belt, his lead in the provisional classification is rather comfortable and he will have the advantage of being able to model his behaviour on that of his opponent, the former Formula 3 driver Peter Elkmann. Elkmann will however probably stake his all until the very final lap. At the same time last year he did not lead the championship when he started the Dutch event so he had to get it all right, and he managed to win both the race and the championship.
Considering that they will need quite a big boost from some really exceptional circumstances to get the title, drivers like Lee Harpham (Anderson-FPE), Mark Owens (ADE-DEA), Carl Hulme (Anderson-FPE), Guido Kleinemeyer (PVP-BRC), John Riley (Anderson-Rotax), Damien Payart (PVP-FPE), Malcolm Crowe (Anderson-FPE) and Trevor Roberts (Anderson-BRC) will be determined to conclude the European tour with a stage victory. The Northern Irishman Trevor Roberts has shown he was in great form over the last few weeks. As a matter of fact, the former Superkart World Champion (1995) won Race 2 of the previous event, at Most in the Czech Republic, and is now making the most of his Canadian BRC engine. Within the field, it is worth noting the participation of two seeded automobile drivers, namely the Swede Thomas Johansson (Anderson-FPE) and the Dutchman Cor Euser (MS-TM). Additionally, the Oceanian continent will have two representatives; as well as Carlo Chermaz (PVP-PVP), who already entered the first two rounds of the European Championship, another Australian will be joining the European Superkart elite: Sam Zavaglia (Anderson-PVP), the 2009 champion of his country.
Boasting 55 drivers of 11 nationalities, Assen will be the Superkart race with the largest number of competitors this season. Drivers enjoy the welcome reserved for them in the Netherlands and know that the 50,000 spectators present each year follow with great interest both Superkart races entered on the programme of a meeting which includes motorcycles, F3 and Formula Renault, as well as the GT and Touring Cars of the “Dutch Supercar Challenge”. And it is not without a certain pride that, at the TT-Circuit of Assen’s temple of motorcycles, the Superkart drivers will keep in mind that their so special form of sport now has an extra fan: a few weeks ago at Laguna Seca, Valentino Rossi won a Superkart demonstration race held as a curtain raiser to the US MotoGP.

Rossi beats America’s bike legends in Superkart race

Valentino Rossi emerged victorious in a Superkart exhibition race against
three American former world champions as part of MotoGP’s USGP at Laguna Seca
build-up yesterday.
The Italian took on Wayne Rainey, Eddie Lawson and Kenny Roberts Sr. in a
one-lap sprint around the United States Grand Prix venue in Superkarts. Although
the event was billed as a demonstration run, it culminated with Rossi
“winning” by a healthy margin.
“Honestly, I was bit nervous about the Superkarts, because I know how fast
these things are,” said Rossi. “I sometimes drive one in Italy with friends,
just for fun, but I know that Kenny, Eddie and Wayne like to race and they’re
quite serious!
“Also, this isn’t the easiest track. Anyway, it was great fun and I enjoyed
myself a lot. The kart is quite incredible; the gearbox is very good and in
the hard braking areas it’s really impressive. It feels very fast and it’s
possible to have a lot of fun.”

600.jpg)
BENNETT'S WINNING DOUBLE
Gavin Bennett (Anderson-FPE) from Great Britain made the perfect start in his bid to regain the European Superkart Championship. Starting from the 2nd row he had some good fortune in race 1 when pole sitter Peter Elkmann (MS Kart-Yamaha) of Germany was involved in contact on the first turn and dropped back to 9th place. Bennett, chasing fellow Brit Lee Harpham (Anderson-FPE) then inherited the lead shortly after the half race distance when Harpham suffered a broken ignition trigger bracket.
Reigning Champion Elkmann fought back strongly and battled with Frenchman Damien Payart (PVP-FPE) as they both gave chase to Bennett. But the 2007 Champion had 3.351 seconds to spare when he took the chequered flag from Payart 2nd and Elkmann 3rd. John Riley (Anderson-Rotax) starting in 26th place after a dreadful qualifying session came strongly through the field to finish 4th. Malcolm Crowe (Anderson-FPE) was almost as impressive going from 25th to 6th. Marcel Maasmann (MS Kart-VM) confirmed his status as the top Dutch Superkart driver with an excellent 8th place.
Less fortunate were Mark Owens (ADE-DEA) who started on the front row but went out on the 2nd lap with main bearing failing. Thomas Johansson (Anderson-FPE) of Sweden was going well when his race was halted by mechanical failure with just one lap to go. Carlo Chermaz (PVP-PVP) from Brisbane, Australia had a most creditable 13th place on his European Championship debut.
In race 2 Lee Harpham was the early leader but Peter Elkmann passed him on the 3rd lap and led for the next 7 laps. But Bennett who went past Harpham from 3rd to 2nd just after halfway, took the lead on lap 10 and held off the determined challenge as Elkmann fought back for the lead. Harpham was relieved to secure a finish as he came home in a deserved 3rd place. Likewise Mark Owens who was never out of the top 4 where he eventually finished. Damien Payart who had only qualified in 10th position, finished a strong 5th in front of Malcolm Crowe, once again having to come through from 25th on the grid.
British driver Carl Hulme (Anderson-FPE) 8th, had his 2nd top ten finish of the weekend as did fellow Brit Paul Kennings (Anderson-FPE) when finishing 9th, and Dutchman Marcel Maasmann, 10th this time.Carlo Chermaz 16th had his second top twenty finish.
So Gavin Bennett takes a perfect score to Most (CZ) next month but defending champion Peter Elkmann with a 2nd and a 3rd is well placed. Damien Payart would perhaps have hoped for better than a 2nd and 5th in his home country. Lee Harpham is clearly very fast but will have been hurt by the non-finish in race 1. Similarly John Riley’s failure to complete race 2 was a severe blow to his championship aspirations.

CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship - Presentation of Round 1 -
Magny-Cours/F (17-19/04/2009)

WAR OF ENGINES
Like every year, the 2009 CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship will comprise three events, the first one being scheduled for Nevers-Magny-Cours (F) on 17-19 April, within the framework of the "Rencontres Peugeot Sport". The following rounds will take place in the Czech Republic, at Most (on 5-7 June), and in the Netherlands, at Assen (on 7-9 August).
Long considered as a single-make category engine-wise because Rotax’s domination was overwhelming, Superkart (the former Formula E) has been able to redevelop over the last few years thanks to the arrival of new, more modern engines types. And competition between engine Manufacturers is now going full swing, to such an extent that several Drivers renewed or changed their equipment during the winter. The recent national competitions held in France and in Great Britain showed the great leap forward made by everyone, and several records have already been shattered, so we can expect to see the fastest time ever recorded for a Superkart at Magny-Cours (1’40”610 - 157.83 kph) fall this year.
Notwithstanding the aging hardy Rotax and the heterogeneous twin-engine TM, there are six leading makes: the Japanese Yamaha, the French FPE, the Italian DEA, the Canadian BRC, the Danish PVP and the Czech VM. The safe values are the Yamaha of the reigning Champion, Peter Elkmann, and the FPE dear to Damien Payart (plus those of Lee Harpham, Malcolm Crowe and Gavin Bennett); however, with a reinforced bunch of Drivers (7) and the experience gained during a full year, the DEA should be in a position to claim victories, as should the BRC, the colours of which will now be represented by Trevor Roberts, a key Driver. Having made it to the podium in 2008 at the Lausitzring (D), the reed-valve-engined VM will also be able to count on an extended presence on the track as Stefan Malm and Alexandre Sébastia are joining the 2008 duo composed of Michal Bartak and Marcel Maasmann. Although it will no longer be led by its genitor Poul Petersen (who will focus on servicing his Drivers), the PVP engine will still be racing, in particular with the Norwegian Erik Martin Gjertsen and the Australian Carlo Chermaz, whose début on European ground will be worth watching. In its hybrid version fitted with substitute sumps and cylinders, the “old” Rotax will try to prove that it is still alive and kicking, particularly with Britain’s John Riley.
Used to Superkart fields, former Ford, BMW and Opel official Driver in the Swedish Touring Car Championships, Thomas Johansson will this year be joined by another colleague who also has a well-filled career: the Dutchman Cor Euser, whose talent was expressed in Formula 3000 and IndyCar in the 80’s and 90’s and was long associated with the Marcos company in GT.
In all, 49 Drivers (representing 12 nationalities) will take the start at Magny-Cours for a programme composed of two qualifying practice sessions (on Friday and Saturday) and two races of 50 km each (on Saturday at 17h30 and Sunday at 15h15).
Important
STARTING PROCEDURE
28) Article 2.20 of the General Prescriptions.
29) Rolling start for karts with gearboxes (long Circuits):
Karts will be preceded by a Pace Car (at a speed between
60 and 80 kph) and followed by a service car. At the end

the switching off of the red lights.
At the end of the Formation Lap, should conditions require

likely to help them to take a decision. The Stewards’
decisions may supersede those taken by Judges of Fact.
Any infringement to the provisions of the Code or of these

New time schedule Assen 25/26 oktober
Subject:
Sound
Hello Kartfriends
The Noise that was created by the Superkarts at the Rizla event in August
has worried the organisers so much that the event on October 25/26th
was in danger of being cancelled so we have been having many conversations
to prevent this happening. We have been successful and the event goes
ahead.
The organisers
have however changed things to reduce the noise risk. The Saturday
private testing has been cancelled and the qualifying sessions have been
reduced by 5 minutes. In addition the noise will be monitored and further
changes may be made if it looks likely that the days limit is going to be
exceeded. This may also apply to the races on Sunday.
It is therefore absolutely vital that you do your extreme best to reduce
your noise output as much as possible and together we can ensure that the
event goes ahead as we want and we have the continued use of the circuit.
Depending on further discussions we are having at the moment it might just
be possible for some testing to take place late on Friday afternoon.
Kind regards,
Jasper, Henk and Dasian

Paddock Oschersleben 11/12 oktober 2008
_______________________________________________________________
30-9-2008
Hello Kartfriends,
Noise problems, experienced by the race circuits, have seen increasingly more stringent rules being introduced. The penalties being imposed by local councils are high. ( with figures of around 20,000 Euros being seen in some cases).
As a responsible organisation and wanting to protect our future participation at the circuits we cannot ignore these restrictions.
At Oschersleben we will use the CIK method and any person above the limit will be given a warning. At Assen we cannot tolerate any driver over the limit so we will monitor each driver and should they exceed the noise limit then they will be brought off the circuit. Other measures such as shortening the race or stopping the race altogether could be introduced by the event organisers.
We very much enjoy visiting different circuits so let us together tackle the problem and we call upon all of the drivers going to Assen to make sure their noise levels are well below the required limits expected.

Medical report Adam Smith
Hi Superkart family
How are you and the family, Ok I hope.
Unfortunately the operation I had on my spine (back) in Germany was only
a temporary measure to keep the bones in place but even though they did
a fantastic job with the 3 operations
They did say I would need a more permanent operation on my back when I
got back to the UK.
I went to the hospital last week for an inspection and when they looked
at the X-ray and assessed the damage they booked me in for an operation
this Thursday !!!!
They are going to totally remove section 12 from my spine and attempt to
replace with a titanium cage and surround with bone from my pelvis and
my ribs, Ouch sounds painful !!!!!!
I wont know how long I will be in hospital as it is a big operation as
the surgeons have to go in from the chest area (front). Oh well I need
to get them all out of the way so I can buy
A new chassis and get back on the track and finish off what I set out to
do and finish in the top 5 of the series ( ha ha ha !!! )
I do think Oschersleben will be impossible but providing I am out of
hospital and well enough to travel I will be at Cadwell !!!!
Oh and I forgot to say thankyou for the get well card it was
overwhelming.
I really do miss you all it’s like being away from my family, would you
please pass my regards on to everyone in the series it’s driving me
crazy being away and I cant wait to see you all.
